How to Style a White T-Shirt 4 Ways

Is there ANYTHING more versatile than a white t-shirt? Methinks not. I think a classic white tee might just be THE wardrobe staple and I hope it’s something that you already have in your closet! My favorite part about these style sessions is that I’m forced to examine what I already own with a new eye and put together some outfits and tips that you can apply to your closet, too. Today I’m thrilled to partner with my friend Lauren to show you 8 total ways to style a white t-shirt for summer! I’ll be sharing my looks here and we’ll both be sharing additional style tips, tricks and looks on Instagram. You can find her here and me here.

A bit about Lauren – Lauren and I were insta-friends before we were IRL friends! We got married the same year, both lived in NYC (but then she ditched me for Connecticut) and love a good ginger jar and a roomy house dress. We finally met a Galentines Day party hosted by Claire and Caitlin earlier this year, and immediately clicked. Like, I am 100% confident if we didn’t force ourselves to mingle we would’ve talked to eachother all day! She and her husband Jimmy have three adorable boys and I adore following along on their adventures! Actual footage from our first IRL meeting below!

Now, back to the white t-shirt!

I’m wearing this t-shirt for every look! I’m wearing a small and have tons of room – it is not meant to be fitted and I love the roomier, non-traditional fit. I also love the raglan sleeves, the high-low hem and notched detail. I picked this shirt for a few reasons 1) the oversized style is a bit untraditional and 2) it’s the only white t-shirt I brought with me 😉 Everlane is my go-to shop for cotton and most of my staple t-shirts are from there – I also have and love the classic cotton crew (tts for fitted, size up for a more relaxed fit) and the slightly cropped box cut tee (size up).

In many ways white t-shirts are easy to style – they go with everything! But the tricky part, in my opinion, is finding the right undergarments! I love this Natori bra and this one from Third Love. Both are seam free and have thinner straps – the perfect combo for under a tee.

And now, the looks!

TWO TEES

When it comes to cotton t-shirts, my two most worn are a white t-shirt and a long sleeved striped shirt. So why not combine them amirght? This look is classic prep and reminds me of what I typically scoot around the city in: jorts* and a t-shirt with an optional layer. I’d throw the striped shirt over my shoulders or even around my waist. Mine is old but this is similar and I’m eyeing this one too! I completed the look with a baseball cap and sneakers – helloooo weekend! This will 100% be Christian’s favorite look – he always says he thinks I look cutest in a t-shirt and jeans! PRO TIP: simply roll the sleeves of an oversized tee to change the look completely!

*I’m a huge jorts fan and reviewed my top four pairs in this post.

WITH A FEMININE SKIRT

Pairing a white t-shirt with a feminine skirt (mine is old, similar here) is a fun way to mix up (and dress up) an otherwise plain staple! That’s the thing about a white t-shirt – it’s basically a chameleon that can blend in and work with whatever vibe or look you’re going for! I went with a white eyelet skirt for a more monochrome feel (duh) and to give the illusion of a dress, which totally works because the t-shirt and skirt and the same bright white. I also added a thick knit ecru cardigan to add some dimension and play with the texture of the skirt, while staying in the same color family. It would also be so cute tied around the waist! I paired the look with these neutral slides.

LAYERED + KNOTTED

I’ve already styled a white t-shirt with a jumpsuit here – but that was my 90’s inspired t-shirt under a cami look. The other option is a t-shirt over a cami jumpsuit or dress! Jumpsuits are a little more logistically challenging so, I went with my fave smocked dress instead 😉 I use this layering technique a lot with striped and darker tees (like I did here), but it works well with this white option because the style is oversized! Knotting a t-shirt is a great and easy way to change the style and feel of a shirt without actually changing it! I added my favorite espadrilles for a fun, feminine feel.

ALL DRESSED UP!

A white t-shirt for date night? Absolutely! A simple pain t-shirt can be super sexy – it’s ALL about accessorizing! Here I popped on my favorite pair of jeans, heeled sandals and an oversized linen blazer (old, but love this one). I would add big ole gold hoops and a red lip and ya girl would be ready for a glass of wine with my honey! Another great trick is tucking the knotted shirt underneath to create more of a cropped top look. If you have a fitted shirt you can tuck the ends into your bra strap – I learned this trick from my friend, Tyler!

Okay now tell me, which one is your fave? And don’t forget to head over to Instagram to get the full scoop, fun commentary and Lauren’s looks!
