New year, same morning routine! Almost every morning, I meditate, complete my gratitude journal (more on that here) and flip through pages of some of my favorite books before free writing in my journal. Each day looks a little different – sometimes I lean into certain rituals over others – but no matter what, doing at least 1-2 of these things helps me feel grounded and ready for the day ahead. Keeping all of my books lined up on my nightstand makes them both visible, inspiring, and readily available.
I frequently share my morning reads over on Instagram, and get a lot of questions about the books I use and love. I shared some in this post last year, which includes my all time favorite daily meditational. That being said, I change up my go-to books and am really loving the rotation I have right now! I hope that you find some comfort, insight and support in these pages, too.
How Far You Have Come by Morgan Harper Nichols
This is Nichol’s second book (I have the first, All Along You Were Blooming, and love it). I always connect with Nichols’ Iwriting – I find her words so peace bringing and centering. She helps me be where I am and remember that wherever that is, it’s okay. This book is a combination of poems and essays with her signature artwork and is great to read start to finish or simply open and read whatever speaks to you.
The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday
I’m new-ish to Stoicism but I really dig the vibe. According to Holiday, Stoicism is a tool in the pursuit of self-mastery, perseverance, and wisdom: something one uses to live a great life. There’s an entire primer at the beginning of the book which I found very helpful, or you can check out the book’s website here. This is a daily devotional, with quotes from old stoic masters and Holiday’s modern interpretations. I find each passage to be incredibly thought provoking and I usually want to journal about the topic after reading.
The Sun and Her Flowers by rupi kaur
Kaur’s second poetry collection is so moving. The poems are about growth and healing, and listening to yourself most of all. As a woman, I’ve found her writing to be particularly powerful and inspiring – her personal anecdotes really hit home.
Heart Talk by Cleo Wade
Another one of my favorite writers, Wade created a book that is truly a treat to read. I love the format – it flows incredibly if you read it cover to cover but you can also jump around and read what feels right. There’s powerful and practical advice, words of encouragement and spiritual boosts in the form of poems, mantras, affirmations and stories.
Clarity and Connection by Yung Pueblo
Pueblo is one of my favorite follows on Instagram. This is his second book (the first, Inward, is on my list) and is filled with poetry and prose designed to help the reader work through how the past can impact the present, but more importantly how we can release and move forward. I love his focus on self awareness and finding personal joy and peace.
